From Gordon Shirreffs' novel
The Cold Seas Beyond, we find this description of a long-abandoned vessel: "An evil type of cold, malignant and foul with the concentrated mephitic odors of years of improper ventilation."
Mephitic means "foul-smelling or noxious."
