Alone with your memories

One of the sad things about very old age is that you have so very few people with whom to share your memories. As time goes by, fewer and fewer people remain who can identify with them or see any value in them. One of the universal afflictions of youth is that it always assumes that what it has is an improvement on what its parents had, and so it devalues anything of antiquity. It has little interest in grandfather's things. And so grandfather sits alone with his memories - and no one to share them with.
