The Yankee army had 133,000 men. Lee had 61,000 - less than half. - and in addition the Southern army was poorly provisioned. Still, Lee divided his army - twice - in the face of this vastly superior foe, contrary to all standard military procedures, sent Stonewall on a flanking movement around the Yankee army, and scored one of the great victories of the war.
