Funerals are an ordeal for the family. They are physically and emotionally exhausted, and instead of getting a little respite, the family has the added burden of having to be hospitable and social to the host of well-wishers. Of course, people have different emotional make-ups. Some need to have people around them and to be kept busy visiting. Others long just to be alone so they can reflect and then get on with their lives. Also, the circumstances of death vary considerably cause different needs in the bereaved. A sudden, shocking, violent death produces different emotions and needs than a peaceful, anticipated decease. All funeral situations are not alike, and so the answers to this question would not be the same.
Whether or not funerals and visitations are of any benefit to the family probably depends upon the circumstances; but they are ALWAY$ of benefit to the undertaker.
