"The City Editor" in old movies

A goodly number of classic movies were centered around newspapers, and the City Editor generally was the center of the operations in those papers. Almost without exception, they were portrayed as hardbitten, short-tempered, crusty, often hard-drinking and chain-smoking. Whether or not this stereotype was correct, I have no idea, but evidently Hollywood thought it was (or did not care).
