The spectacle of one's portrait hanging on the wall creates in one a sort of paternal fondness for the thing: and what you demand from the outside public is approval and enthusiasm - not the curling lip, the twitching nostril, and the kind of supercilious look which you see in the eye of a dead mackerel.
