Rebekah and the whiskey mash

When our girls were still at home, I needed to attend a church meeting in northern Georgia, so we arranged to have a mini-vacation enroute to the meeting. We took in a few sights in middle Tennessee, and thought that a tour though the Jack Daniel Distillery at Lynchburg would be interesting. It definitely was. The processes that they use to make the whiskey are carefully monitored. They talked about the making of the barrels in which the whisky is stored, the spring water used to make it - even the fact that ironically (at least at the time) the distillery was in a dry county. Also, the large barns in which the barrels of whisky are stored are placed far apart so that in case of an explosion, the entire stock will not be destroyed.

As we were going through the plant, we came through the room in which the mash was fermenting. Needless to say, the smell was very strong. Our guide invited us to dip our fingers into the large vats and get a taste of the mash if we desired. Before we could say anything, Rebekah, our second daughter, got a scoop of the mash and put it into her mouth. She started choking and gagging. It was pretty funny, but probably not to her at the time.
