My wife's maternal grandfather (Ralph A. Kramer) served in World War I in the Army Air Corps. One of our most valued family heirlooms is the telegram sent to his mother on 10 February 1918: "Officially reported that Ralph A. Kramer was saved from Tuscania." It was signed on behalf of the Adjutant General. Obviously, he had been traveling on the ship when it was sunk by a German submarine. Below are two links that give more details about the ship and the sinking.

I always love that telegram as a child. It seemed so exciting.
