In Old Monterey (1939)

Gene Autry is a sergeant in the Army. He gets sent on special assignment to try to calm the ranchers who do not want to sell their property to the Army for a bombing testing site. The plot in this one is pretty standard, but it is notable because Smiley Burnette and Gabby Hayes are in the movie together. Both are notable comic sidekicks of this genre. The Hoosier Hot Shots provide comical music numbers. This is a straight-up patriotic movie with a slam-bang finish. Not exactly a spine-tingler, but a whole lot better than the trash they serve to children today.

June Storey is the female interest in the movie. We got to know her first from B detective movies, but she actually made her name in Autry movies. She was a wholesome-looking beauty with a distinctive square chin. Here is a LINK with more information about Storey.
