Few faces were more fixed in the minds of children of my era that that of Tonto from the Long Ranger television series. The character was protrayed by actor Jay Silverheels. He was born in Canada, the son of a chief of the Canadian Mohawk tribe. He was a versatile amateur athlete, particularly in lacrosse and boxing. In fact, he is a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1997, and you can find him on this LINK. His birth name, by which he goes here, was Harry Smith.
