Charlie Chan at the Opera (1936)

Warner Oland is Charlie. This is one of the more interesting of the Chan movies, primarily because the co-star is the inimitable Boris Karloff as an opera singer who escapes from an asylum, seeking revenge for an attempt on his life years earlier. The plot is actually quite emotional for a series which was in essence comical.

William Demarest is the police sergeant who is upstaged by Charlie.

The actual opera that is performed within the movie was composed by Oscar Levant, about whom we have commented on this blog earlier.

Karl Malden had an uncredited part as a hospital attendant.

This is a picture of Karloff in disguise performing in the opera.
