Opened By Mistake (1940)

A zany comedy-mystery with our old friend William Frawley (Fred Mertz from "I Love Lucy") as the prototypical crusty newspaper editor. Throw in the irrepressible Charlie Ruggles, and you have a solid comedy base to work with. Throw in Robert Paige and Janice Logan as the romantic interest, and you have a solid little movie.

Paige is a newspaper reporter who desperately needs a vacation, but whose boss won't give him one. He sends a stranger off in his name, and he and Ruggles blow their money trying to pick a winner at the racetrack. They finally use their last money to buy and unclaimed trunk. It contains (of course) a dead body. Logan is an insurance investigator tracking down a fortune in stolen loot.
