Dennis Hoey

He was Inspector Lestrade in the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes series. He was portrayed as being considerably slower-witted than Scotland Yard inspectors were, no doubt. But, along with Nigel Bruce, he established a lovable character who would endure regardless of its accuracy.

Interestingly, he started his career as a singer.
