General Robert E. Lee's favorite horse. He was originally named Jeff Davis, but when the General changed his name, he used the old British spelling with two L's. During the General's funeral procession, Traveller was led behind the caisson. About a year after the General's death, the horse stepped on a nail and died from tetanus. His remains are on the campus of Washington and Lee University.
