Magic Town (1947)

This is a really good movie that we learned about after hearing it on an old radio show production. Jimmy Stewart is Rip Smith, a public opinion pollster who predicted Dewey to beat Truman, and went out of business. However, he gets an idea to find the "perfect" town from a poll standpoint and use it to get opinions more quickly. He finds Grandview, and moves there supposedly as an insurance salesman. Ned Sparks is his dry sidekick. Our old buddy Donald Meek is their accountant. Jane Wyman is the editor of the newspaper and is skeptical of him at first, but falls for him - until she discovers that he is a pollster, and they watch the town fall apart under the glare of national publicity. However, they are able to reconstruct it at the end.

One of the great scenes is when they visit the elementary school, and both begin reciting poems - at the same time. She does Hiawatha and he The Charge of the Light Brigade. Then the janitor hears them and starts reciting from Romeo and Juliet.
