Evidently telephone operators during the Depression years were taught to have a very distinctive accent, over-enunciating to a comical degree. Or perhaps they just spoke distinctly and the radio shows parodied them. For example, the number 5 was pronounced with an exaggerated "Fi-yiv."In any case, some of the examples on old radio shows are hilarious.
One particularly funny example is on the Sam Spade episode "The Rowdy Dowser Caper." Sam tries to make a phone call to a remote village and strikes up a first-name basis with the operator in the process.
