Insults or kidding?

In many instances, to "kid" someone is a compliment, because it implies that you are comfortable enough with that individual to take that liberty, assuming that the other person will understand and not be offended. However, many people use kidding to take cheap digs at others. They package insults as kidding. So, it behooves us to be very careful with it.
