Otello got it wrong - by a mile

In Verdi's opera Otello, the tenor sings a famous aria called the Credo, which begins with the line, "I believe in a cruel God." He might have believed that, but he was wrong. There is a difference between cruelty and justice. God is just and good, and sometimes His judgment is severe; but He is not cruel.
