If you like The Shadow and The Green Hornet and other radio shows in which the crime-fighting hero has an alter ego, you might like The Whisperer, broadcast in the early 1950’s. It has a twist in that the hero is Phil Galt, an attorney who, because he had lost his voice, had to resort to a sinister-sounding whisper to speak. Later an operation restored his voice, but he continues to use the whisper for his secret identity. His efforts are against “The Syndicate,” a mysterious criminal organization. Ellen Norris, the nurse of the surgeon who restored his voice, is the only other person knowing the Whisperer’s identity (and, of course, just happens to be the love interest in the program as well).
Carleton Young plays the title role. Young had one of the most recognizable voices on radio, which normally was used to play high-class individuals because of his blue-blooded sound.
