Shostakovich Symphony #5 and bleak winter

Shostakovich certainly was one of the great symphonists of all time, but even his greatest fans would admit that much of the time the sound is just like I always picture Russia as looking -  bleak, open countryside covered with snow. As I was driving home this afternoon across the partially snow-covered bottoms near Van Buren, Arkansas, I was listening to the Third Movement of his Fifth Symphony, and nothing could have depicted what I was seeing any better. Cold and lonely.
