Radio shows sticking with the same voice part

Fibber McGee and Jack Benny had different singers, but they were always (at least predominantly) tenors. (Fibber used the King's Men quartet usually, but when they were not there, it was usually a tenor filling the spot.) Edgar Bergen (Chase and Sanborn) had baritones. Not sure why the preference for the particular voice part.
